What is an apostille for a background check?

An apostille is a certificate issued by the U.S. Department of State that authenticates an FBI background check for legal use in another country under the 1961 Hague Convention. Without it, foreign governments will not accept the report. Because the FBI report is a federal document, only the Department of State can apostille it, never a state Secretary of State.

Can an FBI background check be apostilled?

Yes. An FBI Identity History Summary can be apostilled by the U.S. Department of State, and this is required by most Hague Convention countries for visas, residency and dual citizenship. Send the report exactly as the FBI issued it. Do not notarize it and do not send it to a state Secretary of State, which are the two most common reasons an apostille is rejected.

What is the fastest way to get an FBI background check apostilled?

The fastest route is to have someone deliver it to the Department of State counter in Washington, D.C. in person rather than mailing it. Fingerprints & Apostilles is based in the D.C. area and hand delivers every order, which returns your apostille in 7 to 10 business days instead of the 5 to 12 weeks a mailed request takes.

How long does it take for the FBI apostille to be processed?

The Department of State issues the apostille in 7 to 10 business days once we walk your FBI background check in. Your document then ships back on 2-day service, included in the price, and we upload a scan to your tracking page the moment it is issued. Mailing it in yourself instead takes 5 to 12 weeks.

How much does an FBI background check apostille cost in total?

$120 for the first document and $95 for each additional, up to ten. That is the complete cost. The Department of State fee, hand delivery, a scanned copy, tracking and 2-day domestic return shipping are all inside that number. There is no separate shipping charge, no rush tier and no quote to wait for.

What an FBI Apostille Actually Costs, All In

Advertised prices in this industry are rarely the price you pay. The two things that get added after checkout are return shipping and the jump to a speed you can actually use. Here is the honest grand total for one FBI background check apostille delivered on a timeline that works for a visa deadline.

Competitor figures above are the publicly advertised rates of widely used FBI apostille providers as of August 2026 and are shown as a range rather than by name, because their pricing changes. Check any provider's own page before you order. The point is not that we are the cheapest sticker price. It is that once return shipping and a usable turnaround are added, the cheaper-looking option lands within a few dollars of ours and still arrives later, without a scan or a tracking page.

Sworn Translations and Worldwide Delivery, in the Same Order

Most apostille providers stop at the apostille and hand you a translation problem. We do not. We handle certified and sworn translations ourselves, for every destination country, alongside international shipping. Tell us where the document is going and we take it from there. No second vendor and no email thread.

Spain

Sworn translation by a MAEC-appointed jurado

Spain does not accept an ordinary certified translation. It requires a Traductor-Intérprete Jurado appointed by Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the MAEC. Sworn translators based in the United States are recognised for this: the Spanish Consulate General in Los Angeles publishes a MAEC list for its own district.

Our practice is to apostille the FBI background check first and include the apostille page in the translated set, so nothing has to be redone later.

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Three official languages, and the right one depends on who receives it

Bosnia and Herzegovina has three official languages, Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian, and the law does not name one. The correct target follows the institution receiving your file and the entity it sits in, whether that is the Federation of BiH, Republika Srpska or the Brčko District.

The translation has to come from a stalni sudski tumač, a permanent court interpreter appointed inside the country, and is then over-certified by the Ministry of Justice. We ask which institution is receiving the file before anything is translated, because guessing here means paying twice.

Every other destination

Certified translations are available for every country we serve, with no destination excluded, and the requirements differ far more than people expect. Some countries want the apostille certificate itself translated and some do not. Some require the translation be produced in-country and some accept a U.S. translator. We maintain verified, source-linked rules for each corridor so your file is built the way the receiving authority expects it the first time.

International shipping is available to any address worldwide, and inside the United States 2-day return shipping is already included in the $120. Whatever the combination, it stays with us on one tracking page.

Common Questions About FBI Background Check Apostilles

It depends entirely on the destination country, and the rules differ more than most people expect. Spain requires a sworn translation by a Traductor-Intérprete Jurado appointed by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Bosnia and Herzegovina has three official languages and the correct one follows the institution receiving the file. We handle certified and sworn translations for every destination country ourselves. Tell us the destination when you order and we arrange the translation once the apostille exists, because the apostille itself adds pages and pricing it beforehand would misquote you. No second vendor and no quote to chase.
Yes. We ship apostilled documents to any address worldwide, and customers living abroad make up a large share of our orders. Within the United States, 2-day return shipping is already included in the $120 price. International shipping and overnight domestic delivery are selectable options in the order form.
An apostille is an official certification issued by the U.S. Department of State that authenticates a federal document for use in foreign countries. When a country requires an apostilled FBI background check, the apostille confirms the document is legitimate and recognized internationally under the Hague Convention. Without the apostille, your FBI background check will not be accepted by foreign governments.
Because an FBI background check is a federal document, its apostille is a U.S. Department of State apostille, issued by the federal government rather than a state authority. The Department of State Office of Authentications is located in Washington, D.C. Most providers mail your document there and wait 5 to 12 weeks. We are based in the Washington, D.C. area and walk your document into the Department of State in person, which is how we deliver a Department of State apostille in 7 to 10 business days.
The Department of State processes your apostille in 7 to 10 business days from the time we receive your FBI background check, because we walk it in personally. After that, it ships back to you with 2-day return shipping included, and we send you a scanned copy through your tracking page as soon as it is ready. If you need fingerprinting first, that adds about a day since FBI results come back in as low as 30 minutes. The standard mail-in process through the Department of State takes 5 to 12 weeks and sometimes longer.
No. Our apostille service is available nationwide and internationally. You can submit your FBI background check from anywhere. We handle the processing and ship the apostilled document back to you with 2-day shipping included in the price. Overnight and international shipping options are also available.
Most Hague Convention countries require apostilled FBI background checks for immigration, work visas, and residency applications. Some of the most common include Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the UAE, South Korea, Japan, Australia, and many countries across Latin America and Southeast Asia. If you are unsure whether your destination country requires one, we can help you figure it out.
We offer fingerprinting for FBI background checks at our three locations in Alexandria, Fredericksburg, and Montclair, Virginia. Results are typically available in as low as 30 minutes. Once you have your FBI results, we handle the apostille.
Apostilles are priced per document, not per page. Your FBI background check is a single document no matter how long it is. If your FBI report is 20 pages, it is still one apostille because it is one background check. You only pay an additional apostille fee when there is a second document, such as a second background check, or when you need a second apostille of the same background check. Our pricing is $120 for the first document and $95 for each additional document.
Yes. 2-day return shipping is included in the price at no extra charge. Overnight domestic shipping is available for an additional fee. International shipping is quoted live at checkout with real-time FedEx and DHL rates for the destination, and we ship it. You can also pick up your documents in person at our Alexandria, Virginia office.
No, and you should not. An FBI Identity History Summary is already a federal document signed by the FBI, so the U.S. Department of State authenticates it directly. Adding a notary stamp does not help and can cause the document to be rejected, because a notary has no authority to certify a federal record. Send it exactly as the FBI issued it.
No. This is the single most common and most expensive mistake in the process. A Secretary of State can only apostille documents issued by that state, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, and notarized documents. An FBI background check is a federal document, so only the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. can apostille it. If you mail your FBI report to a state office, it will be returned unapostilled, and you will have lost weeks.
The U.S. Department of State Office of Authentications in Washington, D.C. does accept limited in-person submissions, but the practical reality stops most people: it is a single office serving the entire country, the drop-off window is narrow, and it is not open every business day. That is exactly why our service exists. We are based in the Washington, D.C. area, we go in person, and we absorb the scheduling so you do not have to travel or take time off.
Most consulates treat an FBI background check as valid for six months from the FBI issuance date, and some are stricter. Critically, that clock is usually measured to the date you submit your visa application, not the date you travel, and the apostille step happens inside that window rather than resetting it. If your report is already a few months old, start now. If you are not sure your report is still current, send it to us and we will tell you before you pay.
Not for us. FBI results delivered electronically often arrive as a password protected PDF, and a locked file cannot be printed or submitted as-is. Upload it exactly as you received it and include the password when you order. We handle unlocking and printing the official copy the Department of State needs. This is one of the most common reasons a self-submitted apostille gets delayed.
Rejections almost always trace back to the same handful of causes: a document that was notarized when it should not have been, a report that is too old, a scanned or photocopied version instead of the official file, or the wrong authority for the document type. We check every document against those failure points before it goes in, which is the entire value of using someone who does this daily. If something is wrong with what you send, we tell you before submission, not after.
We are both. We run three professional fingerprinting locations across the DMV area with trained fingerprint technicians and both digital print-to-card and traditional ink capabilities. We also operate one of the largest FBI background check apostille operations in the country, serving clients nationwide. The two services work together seamlessly. Get fingerprinted at one of our locations, receive your FBI results the same day, and we apostille it and ship it back.
